Dental Injections .
The Wand .
Ive used this piece of kit for several years now . My first introduction to it was when it was used on me when I had a root canal treatment . I was unaware that Id even had an injection ( I hate them ! ) .
Information for patients about The Wand is at http://wwwpainfreedentistry.uk.com .
You will also see information about Air Abrasion technology which I have just had installed . This means that very early decay can sometimes be treated without resorting to the drill or a needle .
Anxiety about dental injections often starts with a painful experience . Its not the needle going in but the speed at which the anesthetic is put in that hurts . An association then develops between the thought of the injection , and also the appearance of a syringe , and can bring back a traumatic memory .
Having a better experience .
I use topical numbing gels first . Then the Wand is used to deliver the local anesthetic slowly by dripping it in in a computer controlled way , through a clear tube with a very small needle which is not visible to the patient .
The anxiety which you feel before having the injection can be managed in a variety of ways depending on the severity of the phobia .
Air Abrasion
The noise of the drill , the feeling of the vibration, sets the teeth on edge and sets up uncomfortable anxiety and tension .
Some early decay can now be treated with techniques called ‘Minimum Intervention Dentistry’
The caries is removed with a jet of fine particles (Air Abrasion ) , and in some cases this can be done without any local anesthetic if the decay is very shallow and still within the enamel first layer or just below .
Modern tooth coloured fillings are then bonded in to the prepared surface , and polished .
This technique means that a minimum of good tooth is removed .The technique is very good in certain cases , but your teeth have to be examined and assessed for suitability in any particular tooth .
